Shriners club meets today in Kailua-Kona

The Kona Shrine Club holds its weekly luncheon at 11:45 a.m. today at Lulu’s restaurant on Alii Drive in Kailua-Kona.

All visiting and resident Shriners are welcome to attend.

Lauhala weaving workshop today

The hala tree is one of the most important trees in Hawaiian culture.

Learn its many traditional uses, and how to prepare leaves for weaving at a workshop slated from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook. Participants will each create a lauhala bracelet.

The cost is $10 for Bishop Museum members and $15 for nonmembers. Class size is limited to 15.

Book club meets today

The Kona Library Book Club meets on the lanai of the Kailua-Kona Public Library at 11 a.m. today to discuss “The Marriage Plot” by Jeffrey Eugenides. The novel is a character study of three college students in the early ’80s who drift uncertainly into adulthood. It tackles subjects such as mental illness, classism, meaningful work and religious faith. Light refreshments are served; new members are welcome. No meeting is planned for August.

Networkers meeting Wednesday in Kona

Alex Mitchell, a West Hawaii Today marketing and advertising consultant, will present “The Three Steps to Creating Targeted Marketing and Advertising Campaigns” during Wednesday’s meeting of the Business Networking International Alii Networkers chapter. Mitchell will discuss ways to get the right customers to purchase products or services. The group meets from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Island Naturals on Kaiwi Street. Kidney classes begin Wednesday

The National Kidney Foundation of Hawaii will present a series of kidney education classes from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesdays, Wednesday through Aug. 7, at the West Hawaii Civic Center. The Kidney Interactive Workshop & Information program is designed for those at risk for CKD – diabetic, high blood pressure – and caregivers.

The warning signs of kidney disease and how to make healthy decisions are discussed at the first class. The second session covers proper nutrition and includes a cooking demonstration. Physical activities are discussed in the third session, while the fourth session features a supermarket tour.

Seniors touring mac nut company

Kailua-Kona Seniors members will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hale Halawai, then carpool to Hamakua Macadamia Nut Co. Seniors will tour the facility and learn about the harvesting and roasting process. Bring a bag lunch for a stop at Spencer Beach Park. Cancer support group meeting Thursday

You’ll Never Walk Alone, an all-cancer support group, meets from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Thursday. Cancer survivors and co-survivors are invited to attend the group’s free meetings held the first and third Thursday of the month. Light refreshments are served.

Kealakehe SCC
meeting Thursday

The Kealakehe High School Community Council will meet from 5:15 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the school’s staff cafeteria dining room. Oliveira to share preparedness tips
at Rotary meeting

Daryl Oliveira of Hawaii County Civil Defense will speak at the Kona Sunrise Rotary meeting slated from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. Thursday at Hale Halawai. He will focus on things individuals, families, businesses and community members can do to be better prepared for disaster when it strikes.
